5 Things That Make Summer Birthday Parties Easier

Summer birthday parties have a very different energy than school-year parties.
Everybody’s outside more.
Schedules are looser.
Kids are running around barefoot and sticky for reasons nobody fully understands.
The good news is that a few small adjustments can make a HUGE difference.
1. Start the show before food.
This is probably the single biggest party tip I give parents.
Once pizza arrives, attention evaporates into the atmosphere.
Magic first.
Pizza second.
Trust me.
2. Begin about 30 minutes after guests arrive.
This gives families time to show up without punishing the people who were actually on time.
It also catches kids before the party energy turns into total chaos.
3. Think about shade.
Especially in Chicago summers.
Kids can handle heat surprisingly well.
Adults? Not always.
A little shaded area for grandparents and parents goes a long way.
4. Keep the schedule simple.
You do not need:
• bounce house
• petting zoo
• face painter
• foam cannon
• fireworks
• marching band
Sometimes one REALLY good shared activity is more memorable than seven smaller ones.
5. Don’t stress about perfection.
Kids remember moments.
They remember laughter.
They remember getting picked to help.
They remember feeling included.
They do not remember whether the tablecloth folded weird in the corner.
The best summer parties usually feel fun instead of “managed.”
That’s the magic.
