The Best Kids’ Birthday Parties Aren’t Complicated

The internet has convinced parents that children’s birthday parties now require:

• custom signage

• matching dessert tables

• handcrafted party favors

• enough balloons to interfere with air traffic

Meanwhile, most kids are thrilled if:

• their friends are there

• something funny happens

• they get cake

• somebody acts silly

• they feel important for a day

After years of performing birthday parties, here’s something I wish more parents understood:

Kids care way more about energy than production value.

The parties children talk about afterward are usually the ones where:

• everybody laughed together

• the birthday child got to shine

• the adults joined in too

• the experience felt playful and alive

Perfection is overrated.

Connection is not.

Some of the absolute best birthday parties I’ve ever performed happened:

• in small living rooms

• in backyards

• in park pavilions

• with folding chairs

• with Costco pizza

Because the atmosphere mattered more than the aesthetics.

A great party does not need to look like a luxury wedding reception designed by a social media influencer.

It needs:

• warmth

• laughter

• participation

• moments people remember later

Honestly, simplifying things often makes the experience BETTER for everyone involved, including the parents.

Especially the parents.
